“The Vampire” (1957) – Bat Blood Abomination

This is an interesting entry into the cinematic vampire tale. A doctor tests out an experimental medicine pill and finds himself addicted to the things. It doesn’t help matters that the med is derived from vampire bat blood. As a result, Presto-Change-O!, the doctor sprouts fangs and becomes a vampiric creature of the night. The makeup the man dons after his transformation to vampire is quite garish and reminiscent of the similar doctor changing into beast getup sported in “Monster on the Campus”, another minor 1950’s fright fest. Both films share a 1950’s production time frame, glorious black and white cinematography and a medical professional/professor dabbling in some experimental scientific studies. They must be cut from the same medical lab coat cloth!

There are a few creepy scenes in this movie when the bloodsucker stalks his victims, but the conclusion is a little hurried it seems and the beast is dispatched by a run of the mill bullet from the pursuing detective’s handgun. Well, you can’t dodge them all.

Worth one viewing, at least.

Vincent Price’s Dracula (1982) – Good Halloween Fare

A documentary detailing the history of the vampire character Dracula, assembled using various movie clips and the narration of horror icon, Vincent Price.  You’ll see clips from the silent “Nosferatu” and other cinematic appearances featuring the ancient blood sucker such as Lugosi in “Mark of the Vampire”, and the 1950’s alternative vampire film, “The Vampire” .  “VPD” is a good flick to curl up by the fire to watch as we come upon the Autumn season and move closer to Halloween.  Heavy on the garlic fries.  Hehe.
