“The Abominable Snowman” (1953) – Stellar Radio Drama

This is a very well done drama enacted on the old “Escape” radio program. William Conrad plays an adventurer who with his two partners are in pursuit of the capture of the elusive yeti, or as it is referred to in this yarn, “the abominable snowman”. Matters get out of hand as the climbing party experience one misfortune after another including bone chilling cold, raging winds, high elevations and several run ins with the title character.

William Conrad is very effective in his part ranging from bravado to severe humbling after the expedition crumbles around him. Cool soundtrack and sound effects round out this effectively chilling radio play from “Escape”.

“Bigfoot: The Mysterious Monster” (1976) – Best Bigfoot Documentary EVER?????

I love this documentary! This is a very cool mixture of documentary filmmaking styles examining the Bigfoot legend which are then combined with dramatic recreations of encounters with the mysterious hairy giants discussed by the witnesses. The hybrid style works! This thing will keep you engaged all the way through.

Actor Peter Graves hosts and looks very serious and, well, grave, throughout. His demeanor expresses the Gravity of the situation of our subject. His reaction shots to the scientific fellows examining and discussing evidence are priceless.

Actual recordings of Bigfoot vocalizations, footprint photos, eyewitness stories and the inclusion of the Patterson-Gimlin film are shown and debated. The recreations of the Bigfoot family unit frolicking and foraging are wonderful. Overall, a very well-done history and report on the state of Bigfoot research back in the mid-1970’s.

Distributed by Sun Classic Pictures, who put out a variety of documentary features in the 1970’s showcasing Nature or The Great Outdoors.

“The Legend of Bigfoot” (1975) – Suit Yourself and Decide

Here is a film documentary showcasing producer/naturalist Ivan Marx’s exploration to find evidence for the existence of Bigfoot, the mythical giant creature which is said to coexist with Man but can’t seem to pause long enough to ever get examined or clearly defined. I like this grainy film for its ample critter footage of bears, cougars, etc. and scenes of the wilds of the Pacific Sierra. Beautiful country.

In addition to the charming and interesting film work, we also get Marx’s running commentary about his life in Nature and his thoughts about the big hairy guy and his examination of what could be proof of Sasquatch’s existence. You also get an added bonus of seeing some early staged footage of what is purportedly a Bigfoot caught unawares. After the release of the Patterson/Gimlin Bluff Creek footage at the end of the ’60’s, it is shocking to see this documentary’s scrawny hominid in a decidedly ill-fitting black rug-like costume. Oh well. The budget probably didn’t allow for much more.

I used to listen to the CBS Mystery Theater radio program late at night as a kid and, then, in later years tried to relive those happy moments by  collecting old cassette recorded copies of similar radio drama programs.  I stumbled upon this gem, the 1950’s era Escape show and its feature, “The Abominable Snowman”.

The story is presented in an economic style with a handful of characters, emotive music and gobs of sound effects.  All the better that there are no visuals involved so that your mind’s eye can more effectively play tricks on you.  The imagination can be a powerfully suggestive thing.

A search ensues in the Himalayan mountains to find evidence of an Abominable Snowman or Wildman.  Some things are just better left alone.  Tragedy ensues.  Drama.

This is definitely a nice road trip companion to play as the miles melt away.  Just be sure not to pull the car off into some darkly lit, remote location.  Who knows what lurks in the shadows?

Theodore Roosevelt’s book “The Wilderness Hunter” Contains Scary Bigfoot Story – 1880’s

I have come across this story a couple of times and see it as a truly chilling account of hunters turning into prey.  Hunters off in a very remote wilderness “trespass” across an unknown creature’s domain.  Things go very downhill from there. This story is given an air of credibility when it is discovered that this tale was relayed to Theodore Roosevelt by an old Mountain Man and included in Roosevelt’s book, “The Wilderness Hunter”.

After reading it several times over the years, it has yet to loose its fearsome, chilling effect.  Probably my favorite old time Bigfoot report.  Of course, come to find out that there are so many more stories of a related nature waiting to be told both modern and antique.  A little frightening when you think about it.

Well, pull up a blanket and prepare to have your flesh crawl as you listen to this vocal recital of Bauman’s story as presented by You Tuber Bob Gymlan.  My hat’s off to you, Sir.  A nice choice of material and a well done reading.

Kinda Creepy

OK.  Maybe the visual equivalent of paint drying at times but a genuinely creepy situation of some unknown creature baying in the woods.  The second half, with the rocks being thrown, features some sort of grunting primate perhaps?  I think I am glad that I didn’t get to see what was making all the racket.  Sanity is a terrible thing to waste.  Hehe.

yeti

An enjoyable time filler fantasy picture that follows a team that captures a live abominable snowman or yeti.  Forrest Tucker plays a sham naturalist who talks of sharing the capture of a yeti to the world as a scientific wonder.  As the movie progresses, we find out that he is in fact a P.T. Barnum in the making who wants to parade the beast around the world at fair and make a killing at the box office.  Peter Cushing is a more traditional scientist who comes to detest the intentions of Tucker.  Very atmospheric music and sets when the team actually manages to catch one of the elusive beasties.  Dread, then sets in for the human party.

SECRET NASA PICTURES FAKED!

Very mixed bag of items covered photograpically, presumably residing in a super secret NASA vault somewhere.  They have their fingers in every pie!  Here we see underwater pyramids, moon structures, bits and pieces of ancient technology, super structures half buried, excavated alien spaceships, giant human skeletons uncovered, etc.  It appears to me to be wishful thinking.  Photo enhancing may be at play.
