TOP 5 MOVIES FOR MY HALLOWEEN VIEWING

I have given a minute or two of thought to what I would enjoy most viewing on Halloween.  I would most definitely need to take the day off of work because this lineup would probably consume a good 10 hours.  Sacrifices must be made!  Granted this is the first of what may be a series of some of my most adored movies piled together in one marathon viewing.  These movies are what came off the top of my head at the time and can definitely be mixed and matched and replaced with other selections.  I think that makes sense.

  1.  5 Million Years To Earth – 1967 – A Hammer Films science fiction entry that postulates that some long ago Martians visited our remote ancestors and planted the seeds of intelligence in our shaggy, far removed, ancient ape-like relatives.  Is the recently uncovered spaceship located in the London underground still harboring a Martian presence?
  2. The Mummy – 1959 – This is a great one to curl up with your favorite snack and beverage and soak up the suspense.  Very entertaining and satisfying mummy on the loose tale.  Christopher Lee is mainly silent and heavily bandaged as the title character.  Peter Cushing is out to stop The Mummy’s diabolical rampage.
  3. The Fearless Vampire Killers – 1967 – Roman Polanski directed and co-starred in this hugely atmospheric comedy/horror piece about a couple of bumbling monster hunters who try to rescue a damsel who is fortified in a castle full of undead vampires.  Great sets!
  4. Horror Express – 1972 – Another Cushing/Lee vehicle set aboard a trans-Siberian train that transports an ages old ape man found frozen in ice.  The recently unearthed specimen seems to not be fully dead and can swap human hosts!  A true hoot.
  5. Invasion – 1966 – A hospital is literally held hostage as an alien presence temporarily makes a stop on Earth and has to recover its lost property before it can again go back to outer space.  It’s bad enough being in a hospital, as it is!

Like I said, I will make another list of five more films that it would be Heaven to just spend Halloween day watching back to back.  Maybe I’ll defer it until Thanksgiving or Christmas.  I’ve got time off then.  Check some of these films out and enjoy!

Bill Paxton Passes Away At 61

We just lost another great performer.  Actor Bill Paxton just recently passed away.  I have fond memories of Paxton as the cowardly but ultimately heroic Private Hudson in “Aliens”.  There were also noteworthy acting turns in the science fiction and horror genre films  “Predator 2” and “Near Dark”.  He had another great role as a treasure hunter in “Trespass”.

I have heard many good stories of Paxton, the man.  He was described as being a very friendly, warm human being.  Our sympathies go out to his loved ones.

ALIENS EXIST ON THE MOON – UFO DOCUMENTARY – 2015

moon 1 moon 2 moon 4 moon 5

Some ideas never seem to go away.  Over 40 years ago, there was a book documenting strange anomalies seen in NASA photographs of the Moon’s surface.  Some of the images originated from orbital surveyors, others were taken during Apollo missions to the Moon’s surface.  I have to say that some of the things supposedly seen by acute observers of unusual structures and objects on the Moon stretch credibility and take a good bit of imagination to visualize.  And then there are other images, still and motion, which are hard to figure out what the heck they are.  Anyway, here is a documentary which pours over some of these ’60’s era artifacts along with more recent visuals delivered from the surface of Mars by our rovers, Google Moon images, more NASA footage of UFOs in Outer Space, etc.  Seeing is believing or at least wondering if there could be something to these claims of aliens in our midst all these years.

STRANGE AND UNUSUAL CREATURES – WTF?

sb 3shooting bigfoot 2ahooting bigfoot 1

With all the recording devices out there capable of capturing video and digital pictures, it may be but a short time before some substantial evidence of something truly weird will be available.  Have evidence of Bigfoot, aliens, sea monsters and the like already been obtained?  Check out this creepy little compilation of freaky, pixelated pixies of all stripes.  So many monsters, so little time.

ALIEN 3 – A NEW DIRECTION

alien 3 colonial marine 1

Alien 3 is not my favorite entry in the Alien film franchise.  After the kinetic pace and firepower of “Aliens” before it, this tale of the Ripley character marooned on a planet serving as a prison for male only inmates who have no access to guns, explosives, etc. was, to say the least, a letdown.  It was also in this David Fincher directed piece that people started fucking with the alien character itself.  We started to see the alien hybrid creature emerge which is meant to add to its character development as it can’t speak and deliver lines of a script.  In my opinion, it adds no interest to the story to see an alien burst out of a dog and to try and pick out the new features particular to this unholy mating.  LAME! Let’s also not forget that two pivotal characters from “Aliens”, Hicks and Newt, didn’t even make it out alive from the crash of the escape shuttle on the prison planet!  It was a very messy creative decision but that is how we started “Alien 3”.

It was thus a very pleasant shock to find out that Neill Blomkamp, director of “District 9” and “Chappie” fame, has been tinkering with a storyline that will follow on after the events of “Aliens”!  It will be like “Alien 3” and (the dreadful, don’t get me started, another review maybe?) “Alien Resurrection” never existed.  Hicks, at least, will live to face another alien challenge!!!  Blomkamp is not releasing a lot of details but Ridley Scott will be producing the new film and Blomkamp is writing and directing.  What an amazing development in my favorite film franchise!

KOLCHAK – THE NIGHT STALKER – “THEY HAVE BEEN, THEY ARE, THEY WILL BE…”

th (55)

This was an episode from Kolchak – The Night Stalker TV series.  This series was spun off after the popularity of the Kolchak TV movies, “The Night Stalker” and “The Night Strangler”.  Unfortunately, the series was only to last one season.  Series star Darren McGavin was involved with the production of the show and after about 5 years of association with the Carl Kolchak role, I think he had had enough and “buried” the burden of Kolchak.  Check out the excellent DVD release of all the TV episodes bundled together.

“They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be…” deals with our friends (?), the aliens.  Kolchak investigates the strange deaths of zoo animals and a mysterious black ooze that is left behind after the forceful attacks.  The ooze also crops up on residential home lawns.  There are also thefts and scary occurrences where the culprit responsible cannot be seen.  How do all these elements relate to each other and who is behind it all?  Nice, atmospheric scenes inside a planetarium and Kolchak’s repeatedly interrupted attempts to attend/ listen to a Chicago Cubs baseball playoff game are among the episode’s many charms.

INVASION – 1966 – Cool British B&W Science Fiction Film

invasion

I love this flick.  Atmospheric, indeed!  An otherworldly craft touches down in the British countryside.  Three aliens are variously seen in the shadows.  A military unit picks up the craft on radar and begins to search for whatever appeared on the scope.  One of the aliens is struck by a car when the fellow tries to dash across a fog enshrouded road at night.  He is taken to a hospital where he is looked after.  The other two aliens track his whereabouts and put an invisible barrier in place around the hospital.  What are the aliens’ intentions?  A lot of engaging night time photography and mysterious goings on.

LASERBLAST (1978) TRAILER

th (15)This picture was made on a small budget and sports some Ray Harryhausen style stop motion animation effects.  Pretty good effects at that.  Sometimes the figures and models look out of scale with their background but the motion achieved is more than adequate.  This is a good flick for a lazy Saturday afternoon:  enough thrills to keep you occupied but nothing spectacular either.  Kid finds blaster in the desert which allows him to blow things to smithereens.  Cool!  The unfortunate side effect of the weapon is that it turns the kid into a hideous green- hued monster.  The alien owners of the weapon show up and reclaim it from the kid but not without a fight.  I suppose it is a cautionary tale: don’t mess with what you don’t understand.  An otherwise innocent youth not even in his prime is corrupted by the awesome force he uncovers and is corrupted absolutely.  Sounds like too much TV, movies, and Internet usage.

ALIENS – ROBOT SENTRY WEAPONS IN ACTION

th (17)

This was a cool scene from ” Aliens: The Director’s Cut”.  The Colonial Marines stranded on the Alien planet set up robot sentries in the hallways of the complex where they are trying to survive.  The sentries detect motion and are programmed to fire upon any intruders tripping the sensors.  Needless to say, the ammunition runs out fast as the Marines figure out that they are overrun with deadly Aliens trying every means possible to get to the Marines.  Very effective editing and use of sound effects.  We don’t ever clearly see the Aliens being blasted into smithereens by the hyper firing robot machine guns.  Nice sequence.

SECRET NASA PICTURES FAKED!

th (20)

Very mixed bag of items covered photograpically, presumably residing in a super secret NASA vault somewhere.  They have their fingers in every pie!  Here we see underwater pyramids, moon structures, bits and pieces of ancient technology, super structures half buried, excavated alien spaceships, giant human skeletons uncovered, etc.  It appears to me to be wishful thinking.  Photo enhancing may be at play.
