Ah!!! Here is a delightful little trifle called “Race with the Devil”. Two vacationing couples take their RV out into the wild and make the mistake of setting up camp smack dab in the middle of human sacrifice country! Truly terrible luck. After this unfortunate incident, the movie becomes one long chase sequence as the blood thirsty devil worshippers continue in hot pursuit of the couples. Great action and some nice turns by the always dependable actors Warren Oates and Peter Fonda. This one is definitely not an Easy Ride.

THE SHINING – 1980 – TRAILER
Stanley Kubrick’s visually stunning interpretation of Stephen King’s novel. I guess the two follow different plot trajectories. I never sat through the entire King tome. A cursed family moves into a rambling hotel to act as its caretakers during the winter. Seems the Overlook Hotel has some dark secrets of its own that start to manifest during the family’s stay. Expect a LOT of unsettling, frightening moments. The movie takes on the tone of a nightmare. Events, circumstances keep building up and piling on the dread factor. Famous Nicholson over the top performance. Amazing use of Stedicam during filming to move things along nicely.
THE MEPHISTO WALTZ – 1971
Juicy, supernatural soap opera featuring the fabulous Jaqueline Bisset as the wife of an aspiring concert pianist who has her world turned upside down by a gaggle of satanic cult members. Plenty of post Flower Power saturated colors, soft focus lenses and semi risqué goings on. Very enjoyable time waster that plays like the cinematic equivalent of a melodramatic romantic novel. Featuring a cast of great character actors including Willian Windom, Bradford Dillman, Curt Jurgens, Alan Alda and Barbara Parkins.

THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE – TRAILER (1973)
A lovely, wet weather, stay inside creep fest to indulge in and then pay the price by looking over your shoulder or seeing things out of the corner of your eye when the movie does what it’s supposed to do and scares the Hell (House) out of you. A scientist and his hand picked psychics and sensitives venture to a sprawling estate long rumored to be infested with ghosts. The investigators’ purpose is to gather evidence and finally prove that there is a form of life after death: that ghosts really exist. Heavily atmospheric and unsettling. Good performances from Roddy McDowall and Clive Revill. Nice, frightening electronic music score.
HALLOWEEN REEANCTMENT WALK THROUGH – FINDING MICHAEL MYERS!
What a cool concept! A haunted house walk through at Universal Studios in Hollywood of psycho Michael Myers’ various killing grounds. In this scenario, you go toward the hulking Shape and he and other scary figures jump out at you. No nasty slashing or blood spilling is involved. You may soil your shorts but at least you’re doing this in the dark. You may get away with no one seeing it.
LAKE MONSTER PHOTOGRAPHED?
A camera set to take photographs at select time intervals catches a strange shape rising out of a lake near Loch Ness. Is it a log, a large fish, a camera aberration? You be the judge. The Internet is just full of such mysterious photos/videos that allegedly show proof of mythic beasts. One day solid proof of such unusual phenomenon may materialize.
IN SEARCH OF….(TAKE YOUR PICK!)
“In Search Of” was a documentary series hosted by actor Leonard Nimoy. The show ran in the 1970’s and it’s subject matter covered the mysterious, the supernatural, the uncanny and the just plain weird. Here is a sample episode that pursued the topic of Bigfoot. I remember watching this program religiously on Sunday evenings and enjoying it immensely. A precursor to the vast amount of supernatural/docudrama series which populate the cable TV landscape today. Worth seeking out.
VAN DER GRAAF (GENERATOR) – “PIONEERS OVER C” – LIVE
Glorious, orchestrated rock tune from Van Der Graaf Generator. I placed “Generator” in parentheses in the title because at this stage of the band’s career, they had decided to abbreviate their title. Anyway, “Pioneers” is an epic composition highlighted by Peter Hamill’s vocals which alternate between mournful wail and guttural snarls. Hammill possesses a truly unique voice in rock. Rob Halford of Judas Priest learned a few tricks from Hamill’s approach it would appear. I like the powerful, effects laden bass guitar. When I first purchased this live set, “Vital” on audio cassette(!!! I date myself), I felt the bass was overdone but it has grown on me through the years. Pretty unique sounding instrument. Fine string and woodwind accents contribute as well to a rich sonic soup in which Hammill spins his yarn of a group of astronauts hopelessly lost in some outer space no man’s land with no chance of ever returning home. “Pioneers Over C” is a fabulous and multi layered melancholic suite. I only wish we could have witnessed the actual performance and didn’t have to depend on the album/CD/record cover as our only visual for a 16 minute time span! Boring! But this piece of music is definitely not boring.
THE HAUNTING – 1963
Very unnerving, black and white film of the book by Shirley Jackson. Things go bump in the night, frequently, in a gloomy mansion being investigated by ghost hunters. The creepy surroundings are dimly lit and expansive, ghostly, unintelligible conversations are overheard. Shadows crawl. Effective, tense direction provided by Robert Wise. Are the hauntings real or simply created by our imaginations?
20 OF THE CREEPIEST PLACES IN THE WORLD
Danger Dolan is at it again with a smashing documentary on 20 of the creepiest places to visit in this strange world of ours. There are segments on Chernobyl, Winchester Mystery House, and Prague among others. I tend to observe these type of locations from afar. Safer that way. I have been to the Winchester Mystery House, though. Hehe.
